Teribus made the second trip to the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games this year. Friday had a bit of rain later in the day, but the rest of the weekend we had fantastic weather! We played our sets during the day at Grove #2 with Brother, Mother Grove, and Clandestine so we were in good company with some very talented musicians. The concert on Friday night was rained out but the concert on Saturday more than made up for it. What a madhouse! I can honestly say that the people who attended the concert on Saturday were ready for a big show and all of the bands made sure to bring their best. GMHG is a lot of work, but it is also rewarding in many ways. We had the opportunity to play for thousands of people and share our new music with them, make some new friends, see some great performances, and enjoy the beautiful mountain in good weather. Thanks to everyone who attended, thanks to everyone who helped put the GMHG together and make it all happen, and thanks to those who supported Teribus. We truly appreciate it!

When I left Cincinnati, it was 60-something degrees. By the time I walked on stage in Arlington for the Texas Scottish Festival it was over 90 degrees. Fortunately I was wearing my asbestos suit to keep from bursting into flames! Okay, so it wasn’t too bad after all. It just took some time to adjust to the heat. Richard told me he had played at TSF for years not knowing about it and on my first visit (last year) I found the air-conditioned green room.

The crowds were ready for our rowdy bagpipe ensemble and kept us inspired throughout the course of the toasty weekend. We were also in good company on the Glen Finnan Stage sharing it with Brian McNeill and Ed Miller with plenty of other friends and talented musicians making it a great place to be for the weekend. Being a photographer in a traveling band is usually filled with opportunities and sadly, I didn’t take a single photo at TSF. Thanks again to everyone who came out and spent time in the heat to enjoy the music!

Teribus continues to work on the second CD. Randy Miller has been a pleasure to work with at Urbana Recording Studios in Houston. The studio is a clean, quiet space with excellent gear and a relaxing atmosphere. I love recording music and really appreciate a great space to work in. Having such a professional engineer makes the job a lot easier and things run a lot more efficiently as a result. On the music side of things, we have recorded 8-9 tunes so far and still have a few to go.

For anyone who may be wondering why it is taking so long to complete our second disc (first one was released in 2008), the answer is simply a matter of logistics. Every member in the band lives in a different city with only two living in the same state. EJ is in Asheville, Al is in Houston, Richard is in Sherman, and I am in Cincinnati. It makes it a little tricky to get everyone together to record, but the effort has been worth it. We don’t have any official release date as of yet, but will certainly post it once we work it out. We will also make sure it is available on iTunes and Amazon for those who can’t make it to shows or prefer downloads.

Here is a photo Richard took through the glass on Monday during our session. I didn’t know he was taking photos.

Concentration!

It’s a good thing I wasn’t drooling in this shot. My mother helped cure me of the majority of my “drummer faces.” She used to walk by my room while I was practicing and emulate my expression until I noticed her. Usually that would be the dreaded mouth-breather slack-jaw with a hint of vacuous vapidity. It was always funny seeing her interpretation.

More later!

When Teribus was formed, we were focused on what we wanted to play and how we wanted to play it. We wanted to embrace the unique qualities of the members and channel the energetic performance styles of each person. Many people ask us what the name means and where it comes from. Teribus comes from the battle cry of the men of Hawick and is a tune commonly played on the bagpipe. The word may mean “Land of Death” or “Land of Victory” (or something completely different) depending on the person you ask. One thing we didn’t consider was the difficulty in spelling the name of the band. Fortunately, the website maintains a list of search engine results to keep us informed on any new interpretations of the name. For your entertainment, here is a brief list of spelling variations from our archives.

First up is “Terubus” – This entry makes sense to me based on our mispronunciation of the word.

This entry is also quite a logical assumption. When in doubt, add more R’s.

This entry is probably how I would have guessed the spelling.

This entry could be a simple typo or maybe they meant “teribi” in the plural sense of the band.

This entry also makes sense when trying to guess the correct vowels.

This entry also falls under the obvious choice of guessing vowels. I like the letter “Y” and it breaks up the linear look of the name.

Things eventually start to shift by this point. It’s possible this entry could be classified as a “word misheard.”

I’m guessing they heard a certain band member pronounce the band name after he downed a bottle of La Fin du Monde. (add a “th” and some slobber for full effect)

This may have something to do with The French Connection. Why? Kozh I said so! :D

This entry isn’t so far removed but shows some serious enthusiasm for vowels. Might I recommend “teiraebyeus?”

Okay, now I’m getting confused. It may be influenced by Latin, or not.

Now this is just silly. I’m guessing they were searching for this?

Tsessebe photo by Paul Maritz

Of course, there are the verbal “interpretations” that sound like the following:

This sounds like a low-budget horror film that I would enjoy watching on a Friday night.

and then we also have…

Not the most flattering entry, I think. A sweet lady from Hawick approached me one day after a show and taught me the correct pronunciation which sounded like “teeri-bewsss.” I can only imagine the search engine entries after hearing us mangle that a few times, so we will have to stick with our Anglicized interpretation for now. I hope this has been informative for you, dear reader. For our fellow musicians who are currently in the process of naming your band, do so with great care and make sure to pick a name that not only sounds good, but is relatively easy to spell and pronounce…or not!
